17-7PH is a controlled phase transformation precipitation hardening stainless steel obtained by adding Al to 18-8 austenitic stainless steel. When the steel undergoes solution treatment and is cooled to room temperature, it still retains its austenitic structure, making it easy to process and shape. Through appropriate treatment, it eventually transforms into a martensitic structure, achieving high strength levels. The steel has poor low-temperature toughness and becomes brittle below -100 ° C. Corrosion resistance is superior to general martensitic stainless steel. Stainless structural steel parts, containers, pipelines, etc. that can be used for long-term operation below 350 ° C.
Chemical properties: The oxidation resistance is similar to that of 18-8 austenitic stainless steel. Corrosion resistance is superior to general martensitic stainless steel, and is between nickel chromium austenitic and martensitic stainless steel.
Processing performance: The maximum heating temperature for hot pressure processing of this steel is 1150 ° C, the forging (rolling) temperature is about 1100 ° C, and the termination temperature should not be lower than 950 ° C. After forging and rolling, it should be air-cooled. Cold work hardening treatment tends to be more common, and it is advisable to use methods such as few passes, large reduction, and multiple intermediate solution treatments during cold rolling, cold drawing, or stamping. Cold processed products should undergo solution treatment in a protective atmosphere. In terms of cutting and grinding performance, this steel grade has a high cold work hardening rate, so it is advisable to use low-speed and large feed rate machining during cutting.
Heat treatment performance: The steel needs to undergo solution treatment, adjustment treatment, and then aging treatment. After solid solution treatment, the matrix structure appears as austenite with lower hardness, which is easier to process. Subsequently, through adjustment treatment, the matrix structure is transformed into martensite. The adjustment process is divided into TH system, RH system, and CH system. The aging process causes the precipitation of small and dispersed precipitates in the matrix, strengthening the alloy and further improving its strength. The number after the system code represents the final aging temperature. The domestic temperature is Celsius, while the American standard is Fahrenheit. After solid solution treatment, it generally contains 5% to 20% alpha phase. If the solid solution is overheated, the content of delta ferrite will increase, and delta ferrite is prone to deformation and cracking during processing. Therefore, the temperature should be strictly controlled during solid solution to prevent overheating. After solid solution treatment, the steel can undergo martensitic transformation by directly cold working with large deformation (more than 50%). The product obtained by CH system has the highest strength and is usually used for spring products

17-7PH, due to its excellent corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance, and good combination of strength and toughness, can replace some spring steels, austenitic stainless steels, or martensitic stainless steels. This steel grade has a wide range of strengths depending on different heat treatment systems and can be applied to parts with various strength requirements.
Selection suggestion:
Require medium to high strength (below 2000Mpa, HRC35~50), For elastic components or thin-walled parts that require corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance, it is recommended to use this material.
The final surface treatment is mainly chemical passivation (Ct. P) or electrochemical polishing (ECP). Other types of surface treatments can be carried out when there are special requirements, and the user can choose according to the service environment.
