SK5 is a carbon tool steel with JIS G4401 standard. After quenching and tempering, it has high hardness and wear resistance After quenching and tempering, it has high hardness and wear resistance, but low thermal hardness, poor hardenability, easy deformation, low plasticity and strength. Used as various tools that require high hardness and wear resistance, such as simple shaped molds and punches, metal cutting tools, drilling tools, woodworking milling cutters, countersunk drills, axes, chisels, longitudinal hand saws, as well as secondary tools such as fitter assembly tools and rivet dies.
Advantages:
High hardness (reaching HRC 60 or above after quenching) and wear resistance, suitable for cutting tools.
The chemical composition contains elements such as chromium (0.3%) and nickel (0.25%), which enhance edge retention and impact resistance.
Disadvantages:
Low thermal hardness: The hardness rapidly decreases at high temperatures, making it unsuitable for high-speed cutting or high-temperature environments.
Poor hardenability: only suitable for tools with simple shapes (such as punches, chisels), complex molds are prone to deformation.
Weak corrosion resistance: rust prevention treatment is required, otherwise it is prone to oxidation.
3. Application scenarios
Mainly used for tools with high wear resistance requirements but low stress:
Cutting tools: woodworking milling cutters, hand saws, drill bits.
Mold parts: punching dies, rivet punching dies, etc.
Secondary tools: fitter assembly tools, axes, chisels, etc.
4. Similar steel comparison
SK5 has a chemical composition similar to W2 steel and 1084 steel (high carbon, low alloy), both of which are known for their sharpness retention and toughness, but have weaker corrosion resistance.
5. Supplementary explanation
Some sources refer to SK5 as "spring steel", but in reality it is more inclined towards tool steel, and spring steel requires a higher elastic limit. In terms of timeliness, sources after 2024 (such as Xiaohongshu) are consistent with early encyclopedia content, but it should be noted that non authoritative platforms may have wording errors.
