Applicable standards: Cold rolled thin plates comply with GB/T 3280-2015; heavy-duty plates comply with GB/T 4237-2015; American standard ASTM-A240/A240M. 316 is molybdenum alloyed austenitic stainless steel. With extra molybdenum (Mo) compared with 304/304L grades, it greatly improves resistance to chlorideion pitting corrosion and crevice corrosion, which makes it the preferred material for seawater, salt fog and weak acid environments. It is normally delivered in the solution annealed condition.

The material is nearly non magnetic under annealed state; faint magnetism develops after stamping and cold forming.
Explanation on mechanical energy absorption you mentioned: The high elongation rate of over 40% gives it outstanding energy absorbing capacity under impact loads. The austenitic stainless steel undergoes work hardening during deformation; accordingly, it can absorb impact energy effectively and avoid brittle fracture even under low temperature conditions.
3. Product Specifications and Surface Finishes
Thickness range:
Cold rolled sheets:0.1-3.0mm in thickness, 10-1500mm in width, available for slitting or flatplate cutting.
Hot rolled plates:3-100mm for structural components and pressure vessel applications.
Main surface types:
2B finish (most widely used): Matte silver grey surface obtained after annealing pickling and skin pass rolling.
BA bright finish, NO.4 brushed finish, mirror finish and 2D pickled surface.
Material tempers: Annealed soft state for deep drawing jobs; high strength hard tempers from 1/4H H grade are available upon your requirement.
4. Advantages and Disadvantages versus 304 / 304L
Advantages
Thanks to molybdenum addition, its resistance to chloride corrosion is far superior to 304 and 304L grades, making it fit for seawater, salt fog, brine and dilute acid environments.
It has better high temperature creep strength than 304 and can be used long-term between 270ºC and 850ºC.
It possesses favorable weldability, formability and low temperature impact toughness and works reliably in frigid climate areas.
It outperforms Grade 304 against corrosion from sulfur containing media.
Disadvantages
Higher nickel molybdenum content results in a noticeably higher price than 304 and 304L.
Conventional 316 with C≤0.08% tends to suffer intergranular corrosion after prolonged high temperature welding. Select 316L (022Cr17Ni12Mo2, C ≤0.03%) for welded parts.
316 still bears pitting corrosion risks in high concentration chloride seawater; in such cases, 2205 duplex stainless steel is required.
