4130 is an alloy structural steel grade in the American ASTM/AISI standard, belonging to chromium molybdenum steel (Cr Mo steel). Its chemical composition and mechanical properties are relatively similar to 30CrMo steel (or 30CrMoA) in China, but there are still slight differences in some element content and performance details between the two.
Main differences
Manganese (Mn) content range:
The Mn content of 4130 is 0.40-0.60%, slightly lower than the 0.40-0.70% of 30CrMo in China, but the actual overlap range is relatively large.
Control of sulfur and phosphorus impurities:
The S and P content of 30CrMoA (high-grade high-quality steel) in China is ≤ 0.025%, which is better than the conventional standard of 4130 (usually S ≤ 0.040%, P ≤ 0.035%) and closer to the American aviation grade 4130 (such as AMS 6341, S/P ≤ 0.025%).
Intensity index:
The tensile strength and yield strength of 30CrMo/A in China are slightly higher than 4130, which may be related to fluctuations in alloy element content (such as higher Mn upper limit) and heat treatment processes.
Impact toughness:
The impact absorption energy requirement of 30CrMoA is higher (≥ 78J), reflecting its higher requirements for toughness and brittle fracture resistance, making it suitable for more demanding load environments.

Typical Applications of 4130 Steel
American industrial scene:
Manufacturing parts that can withstand moderate loads, such as automotive gears, shafts, bolts, pressure vessels, and oil pipeline fittings.
In the aviation field, improved high-purity versions (such as AMS 6341) are used for aircraft structural components and landing gear parts.
Typical Applications of 30CrMo/30CrMoA
Domestic industrial scene:
30CrMo: Used for machine tool gears, worm gears, turbine generator rotors, compressor cylinder bodies, etc.
30CrMoA: Higher purity, used for aviation engine parts, high-strength bolts (such as aerospace launch vehicle connection components), and high-pressure pipeline flanges.
Interchangeability Explanation
General industrial scenarios: 4130 and 30CrMo can be approximately replaced, but attention should be paid to mechanical performance deviations. It is recommended to adjust them to the target performance through heat treatment (such as quenching and tempering).
High demand scenarios such as aerospace: strict matching of composition and performance is required, for example, American aerospace grade 4130 (such as AMS 6341) corresponds to improved steel grades of 30CrMoA or higher standards in China (such as adding trace amounts of V and Ni to optimize toughness).
4, Other precautions
Heat treatment process:
Quenching temperature: 860~880 ºC (oil cooled);
Tempering temperature: 500~600 ºC.
Both require quenching and tempering (quenching+high-temperature tempering) to obtain comprehensive mechanical properties
Special requirements:
If corrosion resistance or high temperature resistance is required, additional alloying may be necessary (such as increasing Ni, V, or Cr content).
